Guided Moth Bioblitz at Westerrn University

Celebrate National Moth Week with Biodiversity Inventory at Western (BIW) and BioBlitz London to see your local moths!
This is a free guided event surveying nocturnal (especially moths!) biodiversity around the North Campus Building and Visual Arts Building at Western Campus. The event will be hosted by Tim Hain and Tristan Ducharme.
We will set up a mothing sheet and lights to attract moths. We will then be able to observe them up close and take photos to upload to iNaturalist. We expect to see a wide diversity of species - we’re secretly hoping to spot a luna moth!
The mothing sheets/lights will be set up behind the John Labatt Visual Arts Centre (Western University, Perth Drive). Parking is available at the parking lot between the Visual Arts Centre and the Western Interdisciplinary Research Building (43°00'39.8"N 81°16'13.4"W).
*This event relies on proper weather. If it is too rainy or windy then we will cancel the event and notify you by email at least a couple of hours in advance. It takes place at the back of the buildings and is accessible for wheelchairs. Please remember that the area will be dark.
Before you join us...
What to Bring
It's helpful to have a flashlight or headlamp to navigate around the area in the dark. Macro lenses work best for photographing these subjects.
Feel free to bring a lawn chair to rest while we wait for moths to appear. You can stay for the full event or just pop in for a short time if you’d rather not stay up too late. All ages are welcome.

What is a Bioblitz?
During these events, guides will show you how to explore an area to find all kinds of diversity that you never knew was all around you! These events are more focused on exploring. We will make iNat observations and volunteers and participants can share information about some of the interesting species that we find along the way.
All of our events are for anybody - no prior knowledge or experience is required!
